To avoid these hot topics for a while. I am writing this spontaneously, so I hope that I am able to articulate my point sufficiently yet succinctly.
The minstrel show that Jeremiah Wright put on yesterday at the National Press Club is something I cannot help but address here because this man represented his views as that of most, if not all of Black religious people. But the Rev. Wright does not speak for me! Not every Black Christian believes that this country is evil and most, if honest will admit that we live in a day of unprecedented opportunity and freedom. Can we move on already! Here's just a snippet of what the "Rev." had to say:
One of the things that burns me most about his remarks is not only the ignorance, but the contradictions. He talked about his religious traditions being attacked. And then he compared his style of preaching to the words of Christ, who pulled no punches, calling the Jewish religious leaders of his day a "brood of vipers." If I am misinterpreting scripture, feel free to correct me, but wasn't Jesus directly confronting people who were holding on so tightly to their religious traditions that they were unable to serve God in spirit and truth?
Further more, Black folk in America aren't the only people in the history of the world to be enslaved and oppressed. However, I am not familiar with any other nation that has gone to the lengths that the US has to right its wrongs, even, in my opinion, going to lengths that have damaged not only those they intended to "free" but the country at large.
Most importantly, as a Christian, it saddens and offends me to hear a man who represents himself as a minister of the gospel spouting views and beliefs that are so obviously at odds with the teaching of the word. That he has been given a national platform to announce that all Black folk feel the way he does, is reprehensible and I want to state, for the record, that it is simply untrue.
Frankly, I'm tired of these people. The Rev's. Wright, Sharpton, Jackson, and their ilk are an insult to the many pastors of all races who labor tirelessly day after day to bring the true gospel to the hurt, lost, and dying of all ethnic backgrounds. I am not naive and I know that there are many churches in the Black community that embrace much of what Rev. Wright is preaching, and I think that's part of the reason the problems plaguing Black community persist: there is a deficit of truth from the pulpits. However, that's not true of all the churches because I know for a fact that it is certainly not true of my own.
One thing is certain, if true racial reconciliation is to ever be realized in America, Christians must unite behind the truth of the cross and embrace those principles that we have in common. Sometimes I wonder if my Bible is the only one with Galatians 3:26-29 in it. I've said enough. And frankly, I'm afraid if I go any further I'll lose my position on the high ground because that's just how much these people disgust me.

Thanks for setting the record straight Terry. It is awful that this man insinuates that he is speaking for all African-Americans of faith! How presumptous!!! The arrogance displayed by this man and his minions is unbelievable!!
I am going to have to play this a few more times to see if I can hear what you are so disgusted in. Does your Pastor not speak to your congregation in tones and words and inclinations that are in line with your beliefs? Isn't that just what this man is doing? I suppose your Pastor is at a disadvantage because he may not have such a huge audience, with T.V crews following him. I perhaps shouldn't even be responding to this post as I am not living in America nor am I black, nor do I first hand experience the oppression you hear about. You obviously know so much more about the plight of the Black people and how they are being instructed today in America. I do not wish to insult, or offend. It is just that I didn't pick up on his heresy. I will listen again with open ears.
This whole President election thing you have going on in America is wild. Enough already! How can it take that long to convince a Nation that they are real and honest and worthy and have the skills to run a country (not the world).
I admit to being ignorant on things that go on in America, Please don't judge me too harshly. I want to be better educated in these issues, that's all.
Take care now.
Mary, it would take me a year to document why this is an issue to someone who is neither Black nor an American. So from a truly spiritual standpoint, let me just say that anyone who represents themself as a messenger of Christ and Christianity shouldn't be saying things to create divisions based on race. Period. There are other complexities here that I can't expound on in the comments section. As for why this election is so "wild": There are some issues that many of us feel deeply about on both sides and we will fight for the things we care about. It's the American way!:-)
Terry,
I think this character is doing a good job of discrediting himself! NPR commentator Juan Williams did an excellent opinion segment on "Rev." Wright this morning. Here's the url: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90024842#share
Also, Mary, this video is just a snippet of a very long appearance. You tube has all the excerpts if you are genuinely interested in why I have such a problem with this man. As for MY pastor: he preaches salvation from sin unto righteousness through Jesus Christ. He preaches that we are responsible before God for the lives we live and the choices we make. And he does NOT preach a message of blame and hate. Who does that help anyway?
Terry,
I have so enjoyed your thoughts on being a black Christian and what that means to you.
I think you stated things so well in this post.
Sorry Terry. I very much regret sending my comment. I did not intend to offend or challenge your Pastor's preaching or teachings. I obviously didn't express myself very well. I have clearly misunderstood your post as you have possibly misunderstood the intent of my comment. I apologize if I have caused any offense or aggravation. I think if I try and clarify or justify my first comment anymore I will probably only make it worse. Sorry.
Terry,
You know what bothers me about this whole thing? That you have to comment on it.
Not that I'm upset about you doing that! But that Wright has put you into that humiliating position.
All the African American people who have been going about their lives, living in a truly post-racial way, following Christ, doing their best, are now looked at with suspicion. The first question that occurs to someone when they see you now is, "Does she think like Wright?". So you have to clarify.
And I think that's unfair. Wright and Obama by extension have done such a disservice to the black community by now requiring you to make statements on some guy you don't even like. They've interrupted your life, and they don't even realize it.
So thank you for commenting. But I really wish you didn't have to, and that we as a society didn't have to keep seeing this junk spewed forth. I wish we were past it. But idiots like this keep bringing it up again, and dragging the rest of us down by extension. It's really sad.
Visit To Love, Honor and Vacuum today!
I am absouletly disgusted with this mess. Never ask "how ignorant can you get" because someone will go all out to show you just HOW ignorant THEY can get!
And for the record, Jesse, Al nor Jeremiah rate the title Reverend and you will never "hear" me address them as such.
I agree as well this man doesn't represent me I can think for myself and no I can't imagine Obama being our president his abortion record is atrocious and he is way too inexperience to become a president there are other reasons but I think I've made my point somewhat.
Terry,
You know I agree with you all the way, however I must interject one point. I don't really agree with you last statement. Isn't that unfair to label Sen. Obama because of his FORMER pastor's sentiment.
Isn't it true that sometimes we can have people in our lives who touch us in a way that is so positive, and then one moment they can change face. I believe that despite the fact that I don't agree with all of his platform, he is doing all that can be done to renounce this man, and publicly stand against all that he has said. John McCain also had a minister that was spewing some disgusting rhetoric, as Hillary Clinton's husband, but I don't feel that its fair, once a mam says this person doesn't represent me, and I stand against his view points and he is my former pastor- - we have to cut him some slack.
Just think, what if some one close to you went out and openly did something that did not represent you would you like for people to label you in a negatiave light without giving you the benefit of doubt that you aren't going to be judged by God on what that person says???
I just think that we cant judge everyone against someone elses actions. That puts us in a scary place... I still love you though, even though you don't like Barack. I think that personally he has made some historical, and awesome accomplishments. Politcally, well I have another opinion, and its not just him, I don't think there is anyone that I desire to vote for.
Terry, I truly believe he is digging his own grave, and that of Obama's too! I don't blame you at all for being disgusted.
I'm especially glad that there are preachers (both black and white) who preach more on the Truth of God's Word and less on social issues. After all, God has given us the cure: "If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." II Chron 7:14
You know soon to be not so Single Mom, when you're right, you're right. And you are right. I should not have automatically linked Mr Wright's statements to Sen. Obama, especially when he has repeatedly denounced the statements. I stand corrected. Thank you for calling me out on it.
Terry, I like this post, and your sincerity that oozes all over it. Thank you for speaking up for yourself, and many others I'm sure. I'm amazed that somehow, America is supposed to just pay no mind to the fact that Obama has readily chosen to associate himself with this man, as if it doesn't mean anything. How stupid are we supposed to be? And somehow, Obama just never got wind of these statements apparently made in his absence???? If my preacher had preached such a sermon, you better believe it would have been talked about for some time, in fact that's the kind of talk that leads to church splits, unless, that is, the church is already in agreement about it, and in fact, even used to that kind of talk. In which case, how could Obama act so ignorant of it?
Hugs, kisses and belly rubs:)
Thank you so much for your posts ( I just found you through Homeliving Helper). As as a kind of peachy pink colored woman married to a caramel colored man I find that this style of "Christianity" puts so many of us at odds with each other. I mean, if you are not black you have it drilled into you that you are an oppressive racist and if you are black you have it drilled into your head that you should be really ticked off because someone has done you wrong and someone should pay for it. This is just the tip of the iceberg of these horrible teachings, by white, black, hispanic and other "PASTORS" it is just sowing seeds of hate.
Aren't we red in the blood of JESUS! We miss out on so much we could be doing for the Kingdom of God.
How like Satan to get us so busy fighting amongst ourselves that we never present a united front against the real enemy.
Thank you THANK YOU for saying how America has tried to right its wrongs. My family came to this land as indentured slaves, many others come currently as slaves, MANY MANY OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE SLAVERY RIGHT NOW!
Yet, this Nation, Under GOD freed the slaves because CHRISTIANS OF ALL COLORS FOUGHT SIDE BY SIDE TO DEFEAT THAT EVIL. Let's not let it tear us apart now!
Many Blessings :)
Ace
Terry,
"Rev." Wright is a powerful and dynamic speaker-but this does not make him a true minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Neither do his fancy robes. All I see is a pride-filled, egotistical maniac reveling in his fifteen minutes of fame. I do believe, however, that God is definitely using him...to destroy Obama's campaign for the presidency!
Anonymous, I agree with you on your last point.
Unborn babies nationwide can breathe a little easier as this infanticide supporter's candidacy goes down in flames.
Now how do we get rid of Mrs. Clinton? For that matter, is there a better alternative to John McCain?
I was trying to control myself too, Terry. Jeremiah Wright is the kind of "leader" who wants division between the races, not unity. I would be disgusted too if this man claimed to be my spokesperson.
As for Obama, the more I learn about him, the worse it gets. He has people hypnotized though, it's weird. On this National Day of Prayer, May 1st, I pray that people's eyes would be opened to the realities of what Clinton and Obama truly stand for before they pledge their allegiance in the months running up to this election.
Oh, and after reading the comments, I too acknowledge that Obama denounced his pastor BUT as far as I am concerned there are enough reasons to be suspicious of Obama without associating him with anyone.
That said, Obama has said before some really suspect things that seem influenced by his former pastor like when he said all white people are basically racist like his grandmother.
As far as I am concerned, you cant sit in someones pulpit for 20 years, be a part of their "family" and have such intimate contact that all of the sudden, their politics and their views and theology are foriegn to you?! Come on!
Terry, I have not had time to blog lately for many reasons, but decided to check in on you. I should have known you'd be speaking truth here!
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Rev Wright does not speak for the black church we are members of nor any we've attended. Thank you for keeping it real!!!
What Wright says is an insult to Christians everywhere...no matter what color they are. Thank you so much for this post! I love to read stuff like this from level-headed thinkers like yourself! Thank you!
Great post. I think it is sad that you even have to stand up and say that not all African-American Christians think like Wright... Pretenders sicken me. Regardless of their race. Going around, making claims that you're representing Christ is no small thing. I wish people didn't abuse Christianity like that.
And I don't think it's a problem that you mentioned Obama at the end. Wright has been his friend AND spiritual leader for twenty years. Just because he is suddenly denouncing Wright does not mean that he doesn't agree with the man. He just came to realize that he has to make it look like he has nothing in common with Wright because Wright will kill Obama's campaign.
